We are pleased to announce the winner of this year's QS ImpACT Women's Scholarship: Shreya Jai.
Shreya is a student from India originally, living in the UK. She has spent her academic career so far studying water pollution in urban environments and has also ventured into business enterprises. She is a co-founder of a breastfeeding education company and has helped to empower women. Her research in the engineering field brings more gender diversity to a subject that is largely dominated by men.
What did you find the most challenging about writing your scholarship application?
I found it hardest to settle on something that felt like it was genuinely contributing to a more equal society, but that also felt personal and true to me. That ended up being my experience as a Design Engineering student and co-founding Mamilla, a breastfeeding education start-up.
More than anything, writing the application became an exercise in reflection. It forced me to think beyond what I had built and instead focus on why the problem mattered, who I was designing for, and the impact I hoped to create. Putting those personal motivations into words was far more difficult than describing the project itself, but it ultimately helped me better understand the purpose behind my work.
What part of your application are you most proud of?
Looking back, I am actually most proud that I gave myself the chance to apply. When I first saw the application, I honestly was not even sure whether to apply because it was QS and I knew how competitive it would be.
However, once I started writing, the essay came really naturally because it was centred around something I genuinely cared about. The process of reflecting on my experiences made me realise how much I had grown and achieved over the past few years, and I finished the application feeling genuinely proud of the journey I had taken.
Why did you choose UCL in particular?
I chose to pursue my PhD at UCL because I wanted to build on the research I began during my Master’s thesis at Imperial College London on chemical pollution in urban waterways due to everyday household activities like administering flea and tick treatment to pets.
This project introduced me to wider challenges and sparked my interest in understanding not only how to design individual interventions, but how these technologies can be adopted, integrated into existing systems and encourage more sustainable behaviours.
UCL immediately stood out as the ideal place to continue developing this research. The interdisciplinary environment within the Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering department strongly aligns with my design engineering background and my approach of my approach of using design to research, build and test solutions.
